American Architecture: Ideas and Ideologies in the Late Twentieth Century

American Architecture: Ideas and Ideologies in the Late Twentieth Century

$52.14

A landmark successor to the acknowledged classic, Architects on Architecture American Architecture Ideas and Ideologies in the Late Twentieth Century Paul Heyer From the author of the best-selling Architects on Architecture, here is an important new contribution to the history and theory of modern architecture. Arriving at an intriguing time of reevaluation of the early modern movement and growing sensitivities to historicism and cultural connectivity, this sequel offers a striking picture of much of the best work produced by America’s leading architects in the late twentieth century. Readers will receive an unprecedented look at the work of more than one hundred of the most important, most influential contemporary architects, examined in light of the evolution of new ideas and the advent of new technology. More than five hundred illustrations go beyond illumination of the text to function as an extraordinary pictorial history of the architect’s artistry. Reflecting the author’s view that styles are inevitable, given the cultural climate, physical context, and the problem the work is intended to solve, American Architecture probes the dominant styles of the late twentieth century. From the legacy of Modernism in the 1960s to that of Post Modernism, Deconstructivism, and other prevailing styles, Paul Heyer offers a beautifully written, elegantly designed critical survey of the evolution of architecture. Dealing with crucial aspects of history, culture, art, and design, the book’s sweeping coverage anchors the built artifact into its own time, relative to its cultural meaning. Certain to take its place as one of the most influential architecture publications of the decade, American Architecture is essential reading for architects, interior designers, art and architectural historians, and all interested readers seeking intelligent insights into how architecture is shaped and even why it might look the way it does.

 Andree Putman: Complete Works

Andree Putman: Complete Works

$85

Indisputably the grande dame of modern design, Andrée Putman burst onto the scene twenty-five years ago with the graphic, black-and-white interiors of the Morgans Hotel in New York. Since then Putman has gone on to redefine design for a diverse group of prestigious clients, including Karl Lagerfeld, the French Ministry of Culture, and the interior of the supersonic Concorde. Projects since 1980 range from museum interiors, a jewelry line for Christofle, private residences for global trendsetters, and a film set for Peter Greenaway. Putman’s work is the epitome of chic, incorporating cashmere and leather with affordable ceramic tiles and industrial metals for interiors that speak volumes for Putman’s unmistakable style of quiet luxury. The same attention to detail is given to a simple necklace as to furniture collections, grand offices, and entire spa hotels. Putman is also credited for the revival of once-forgotten early modernist designers, such as Eileen Gray, Robert Mallet-Stevens, and Jean-Michel Frank, whose designs she put back into production and used in her famous interiors. The first comprehensive monograph on Putman’s essential designs in 20 years, Andrée Putman Complete Works will be an indispensable road map of style and elegance to all lovers of modern design.

His fourth book, Charles Faudree Interiors, continues to reveal his versatility in classic and international styles, and showcases his newest signature country French interior-his own new cabin nestled in the Oklahoma countryside-along with a tropical island retreat, a chic metropolitan high-rise, and homes done up in Georgian, contemporary and ranch high style. Here, in his personal, engaging manner, Faudree walks us through the challenges and successes of his newest designs that prove French Country can keep its traditional spirit and still be modern, surprising and edgy. Charles Faudree was named one of America’s top 100 designers in 2002. He is often featured in design magazines, including Traditional Home, Southern Living and House Beautiful. His previous books, Charles Faudree’s French Country Signature, Charles Faudree’s Country French Living, and Florals and Interiors have been widely lauded. While designing homes and creating books, Charles maintains a retail shop in Tulsa, and has launched a fabric line, The Charles Faudree Collection, for Vervain. His trademark use of electrifying color combinations, and mixing antiques, modern furniture, and abstract paintings became the “in style” for the chic of the day, including Vidal Sassoon and Helena Rubinstein. By the ’70s, David Hicks was a brand; his company was making wallpaper, fabrics, and linens and had outposts in eight countries, including the U.S. where he worked with the young Mark Hampton, and where his wallpaper was used in the White House. “My greatest contribution as an interior designer has been to show people how to use bold color mixtures, how to use patterned carpets, how to light rooms, and how to mix old with new,’’ he stated in his 1968 work, David Hicks on Living—with Taste, the last authoritative book on his work. Written by his son Ashley Hicks, who has unprecedented access to Hicks’s archives, personal photos, journals, and scrapbooks, this is a vibrantly illustrated celebration of a half century of stunning interiors.

 Designing Modern Britain

Designing Modern Britain

$35

British culture is marked by indelible icons–red double-decker buses, large oak wardrobes, and the compact sleekness of the Mini. But British industrial and product design have long lived in the shadows of architecture and fashion. Cheryl Buckley here delves into the history of British design culture, and in doing so uniquely tracks the evolution of the British national identity. Designing Modern Britain demonstrates how interior design, ceramics, textiles, and furniture craft of the twentieth century contain numerous hallmark examples of British design. The book explores topics connected to the British design aesthetic, including the spread of international modernism, the eco-conscious designs of the 1980s and 1990s, and the influence of celebrity product designers and their labels. Buckley also investigates popular nostalgia in recent times, considering how museum and gallery exhibitions have been instrumental in reimagining Britain’s past and how the heritage industry has fueled a growing trend among designers of employing images of British culture in their work. A thoughtful look at the aesthetic heritage of a nation that has left its footprint around the globe, Designing Modern Britain will be a valuable text for students and professionals in design.

Details: A Stylist's Secrets to Creating Inspired Interiors

Details: A Stylist’s Secrets to Creating Inspired Interiors

$40

When you think about decorating, you probably envision big changes, big purchases, and big costs. Interior stylist Lili Diallo has two words for you: Start small. She specializes in bringing homes alive through the details—a silvery pillow here, a floral screen there, and plenty of personality everywhere.     Stylists typically transform spaces by working with pieces that are already present, and their goal is to translate the residents’ stories and passions into their surroundings. Details teaches you how to find your very own design story by focusing on which colors, textures, and objects make you feel most at home. You’ll also learn how to reimagine familiar objects and how to transform an area just by adding one key piece, such as a bright yellow rug that softens a room’s midcentury modern furniture.       Inspiration streams through hundreds of stunning photos. Taking a cue from Dorothy Draper, one apartment dweller uses a classic color scheme as a starting point but adds her own original, personal touch to the space with sleek lamps and a metallic coffee table. In another home, a crystal cherry blossom chandelier and a coat of gray paint transform a small kitchen into a glamorous and soothing ice-storm scene. Glazed bowls and English country patterns set the tone in the Manhattan apartment of a die-hard gardener whose spacious terrace is a floral wonderland in the warmer months. Glimpses into the residences of fashion tastemakers and interior designers reveal how to blend finds from IKEA, eBay, flea markets, and high-end antiques stores for effortlessly quirky character. Above all, within these pages you will discover how to edit your beloved belongings and arrange a room so there’s just charm, no clutter.       Equally enjoyable to read as it is to look through, Details is infused with

Elements: The Heart of the City

Elements: The Heart of the City

$3.4

This single-structure monograph presents a masterpiece of modern design, showcased in stunning images and photography. Internationally acclaimed architects, master planners, and interior designers at Benoy completed the Hong Kong Elements Mall in October of 2007. Central to Benoy’s vision was the intention of creating a “sense of place.” Simon Blore, the executive director of Benoy in Hong Kong, believes that “each project needs to have a unique identity so that it relates to its place, its location. This sense of place was created at Elements by adapting the Chinese Feng Shui principles off the five elements of nature. This concept was then woven through the whole design as a narrative on nature with the external facades and art contributing to the story.” Benoy’s design for Elements draws inspiration from ancient Chinese symbols, the five elements of nature — Fire, Earth, Wood, Water, and Metal — enrich the design with a variety of colors and textures, allowing the creation of five different, yet connected retail zones. By introducing the concept of retail zones and variety in spatial character, Benoy addressed the key concern of orientation within the vast mall floor plate. Elements Mall won the prestigious Urban Land Development Award for Excellence: Asia Pacific in July 2008.

An intimate and revealing collection of photographs of astonishingly beautiful, iconic, and undiscovered mid-century interiors. Among significant mid-century interiors, none are more celebrated yet underpublished as the homes created by architects and interior designers for themselves. This collection of newly commissioned photographs presents the most compelling homes by influential mid-century designers, such as Russel Wright, George Nakashima, Harry Bertoia, Charles and Ray Eames, and Eva Zeisel, among others. Intimate as well as revelatory, Williamson’s photographs show these creative homes as they were lived in by their designers: Walter Gropius’s historic Bauhaus home in Massachusetts; Albert Frey’s floating modernist aerie on a Palm Springs rock outcropping; Wharton Esherick’s completely handmade Pennsylvania house, from the organic handcarved staircase to the iconic furniture. Personal and breathtaking by turn—these homes are exemplary studies of domestic modernism at its warmest and most creative.

Interior Design Clients: The Designer's Guide to Building and Keeping a Great Clientele

Interior Design Clients: The Designer’s Guide to Building and Keeping a Great Clientele

$15.03

Clients are the lifeblood of any interior design firm and a sound understanding of how to manage those clients is essential. Interior Design Clients is an informative yet fun read for entrepreneurial designers interested in gaining a better understanding of how to build and manage their clientele. Tom Williams, designer, author, and blogger, deconstructs the pitfalls and challenges that can waylay even seasoned designers. As many professional designers learn, clients can be intimidated by interior designers and sometimes can even be fearful of the process. This unreasonable intimidation can often hinder the designer-client relationship and can even stop clients from asking for what they want. This leads to clients being unsatisfied and then walking away with a negative impression of their designer. Learning why clients fear their interior designer and developing strategies to allay those fears is essential for gaining and keeping a satisfied clientele. Everything from good client, project, and time management to interview techniques and staff and paperwork organization can all lead to making client interaction as rewarding as possible and are important aspects of the business rarely addressed by the interior design community as a whole. Interior Design Clients covers the subjects rarely taught in design schools such as specific presentation and interview skills and how to sell to market. Through frank discussion and practical examples, Williams weaves the art of selling into his lessons on interviewing, presenting, and pleasing the client as a natural part of the design process. Becoming a residential or commercial interior designer is not an easy undertaking, but Thomas Williams’ Interior Design Clients: The Designer’s Guide to Building and Keeping a Great Clientele provides the fundamental lessons and innovative solutions to help designers succeed in the ultra-competitive world of modern interior
