When Interior Decorating your house, what are the do’s and don’ts?

Of painting and decorating?

Do pick a color that you love. The best way to help pull everything together is to find a fabric that has the color in it. Look at the other colors that are used in the pattern and use those as you accessory colors, like the drapes, curtains, throw pillows, rugs and throw blankets.
Do take time in finding the things that pull at you. Don’t just grab things because you like at that moment on time (for the larger purchases). Take the time to think it over and how you might feel about it in five years.
Do groupings of like things (accessories) in odd numbers. In nature odd numbers are the norm.
Do remember that when you’re decorating YOU have to live with it, no matter what anyone else says.

 American Designers' Houses

American Designers’ Houses

$8.48

What goes into a home? For Karim Rashid, the dynamic young product and interior design guru, a living room is accented with a combustible mixture of hot pinks and iridescent orange. The Connecticut home of David Easton, one of the reigning kings of traditional design, features a vast central space overlooking a classically proportioned garden. Holly Hunt, the hip young West Coast designer, has married an American sensibility with French country charm in her Parisian apartment. All of these homes are distinctive, and all show remarkable taste, which is hardly surprising given that their owners have the sharpest eyes in the Western Hemisphere. The 20 designers featured in American Designers’ Houses consider their homes part laboratory, part showroom, and entirely personal. In interviews that are akin to guided tours, the designers point out favorite objects, reminisce about their work and clients, and share design tips. By focusing on interior designers’ own homes, this fascinating book captures their style in its purest and most personal expression, uncompromised by clients’ demands, and will encourage readers to develop their own unique decorating style.

American Farmhouses: Country Style and Design

American Farmhouses: Country Style and Design

$35

A country farmhouse surrounded by fields and trees is a quintessentially American secene, but it’s one that has universal appeal. These simple homes speak to us of history and values, promising both comfort and protection. The “country look” remains the single most popular American style. Despite social and economic changes and the whims of fashion, it continues to shape our design and decorating tastes. Now in these lavishly illustrated pages, American Farmhouses offers a rich and inspiring survey of country architecture and design, from painted furniture to porches, stenciling to saltbox houses. Part of the appeal of country homes lies in their hand-hewn individualism and heritage of Old World charm. Many familiar design elements derived from distinct traditions brought by the early settlers, then adapted to local conditions and materials. Even in the early twentieth century, most country houses were still designed and constructed by local craftsmen, resulting in an immensely rich variety still visible in farms large and small across the country. Today, the interior of a country home can be a meticulous restoration in a traditional style or a flea-market mix of furnishings and collectibles. The nearly twenty profiles of country homes in American Farmhouses, ranging from a rustic German-style house in Texas to a classic Greek Revival in upstate New York to a contemporary reinterpretation in Connecticut, are full of stimulating and original ideas. To help readers bring the “country look” home, whether in a city apartment or a rural getaway, American Farmhouses also includes a detailed sourcebook of manufacturers, craftsmen, and architectural antiques dealers nationwide. Here is everything from cast-iron firebacks to milk paint to farmhouse tables, from suppliers who continue to keep the spirit of the farmhouse vital and alive today.

Billy Baldwin: The Great American Decorator

Billy Baldwin: The Great American Decorator

$65

The definitive book on the legendary decorator Billy Baldwin, known as the “Dean of American Decorating,” famous for his classical taste, streamlined modernism, and brilliant use of color. In the tradition of Rizzoli’s Albert Hadley and David Hicks, this is the first fully illustrated account of the career of Billy Baldwin (1903–1983), one of the most important decorators of the twentieth century, whose work has influenced contemporary designers from Bunny Williams to Jeffrey Bilhuber. A native of Baltimore, Baldwin’s work caught the eye of eminent New York decorator Ruby Ross Wood. She invited him to join her firm, saying his work stood out “like a beacon of light in the boredom of the houses around it.” Baldwin’s style was a revelation—simultaneously classical and modernist, tailored and clean, yet dramatically colored, and above all American. An enemy of clutter and conspicuous wealth, he favored natural materials and comfortable furniture. The drama in his rooms often came from color, as seen in the dark brown lacquered walls of Cole Porter’s library or the scarlet cotton print that covered Diana Vreeland’s apartment. Immensely charming, Baldwin was a popular addition to the high society of New York. His clients included Bill and Deeda Blair, Babe and Bill Paley, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. With a foreword by Baldwin’s former student Albert Hadley, and enriched by never-before-published transcripts of four 1974 lectures that Baldwin gave at the Cooper-Hewitt, this is an important book for anyone interested in interior design.

Bunny Williams' Point of View: Three Decades of Decorating Chic and Comfortable Houses

Bunny Williams’ Point of View: Three Decades of Decorating Chic and Comfortable Houses

$65

An Affair with a House continues to be a top seller for STC, with more than 45,000 copies in printShows readers how to realize their own taste and design preferencesYou learn from people with great taste,” says Bunny Williams. She should know. As a novice, Williams worked for legendary decorators Sister Parish and Albert Hadley, absorbing everything she could of their peerless design sense. Striking out on her own, she rose to the top rank of the interior design profession, where she has stylishly remained for the last 30 years. Now, it’s our turn to learn from her. Part memoir and part how-to manual, Bunny Williams’ Point of View showcases many of the drop-dead chic but always cozily comfortable residences whose interiors Williams has designed during her astounding career. As Williams tells it, every design decision she makes is based on a bedrock principle: “Knowing what you value is essential.” Her conviction that every person’s home should manifest their personality guides her as she creates environments that fit each client precisely, “like a couture suit.”By showing you how to plan and then accomplish that plan for each room of your house, Williams inspires you to take account of your own values–and to realize your personal vision of how you want to live. As she says about the book: “My point of view will help you discover yours.”

Country Color: Perfect Palettes for Every Room

$0.77

Whether cool and pale or bright and warm, country color plays a pivotal role in bringing a stylish, cozy, and comfortable mood to rooms that emphasize the charms of rural life. Showcasing both traditional and modern country houses, celebrated interiors expert Judith Miller demonstrates how to achieve the perfect balance of colors and textures to create a warm and inviting refuge from the outside world. In this innovative guide, colors and textures co-mingle to weave a highly original and imaginative interior that forges a powerful connection with the land around it.  And to make the book even more useful, swatches for fabrics and paints as well as codes to match paints from Benjamin Moore, Ralph Lauren, and Farrow & Ball are provided. In New England, deep wood colors are matched with rich burgundy, while in the rural South, long porches and large, open rooms are painted in cool colors to offset the heat. In warm climates such as North Africa, Spain, and New Mexico, bright white and terra-cottas reflect the warm sand of the arid desert. The book includes sections on natural materials—wood, stone, and earth—and decorating with furniture, pottery, and fabrics. “Country color plays a pivotal role in bringing a stylish, cozy and comfortable mood to rooms that emphasize the charms of rural life.”—Country Accents “Great photography by Simon Upton . . . this book (is) both practical and inspirational.”  ~ The Telegraph “Host of inspirational colour schemes in (a) beautifully illustrated book.” ~ The News Letter “A bountiful source of ideas for colour schemes.”  ~ Utopia Kitchen & Bathroom“Country Color is chock-full of many gorgeous color photos.” ~ Decorology “(Judith Miller) ably tackles this all-important topic

 Decorating the 'godly' Household

Decorating the ‘godly’ Household

$75

Tara Hamling examines decorative features from historic houses throughout England and Scotland and identifies a significant but overlooked trend in the history of British art. She reveals a widespread fashion for large-scale religious imagery in houses owned by the gentry and prosperous middle classes during the period 1560-1660 which is interpreted in relation to life in the ”godly” household. The book is copiously illustrated with narrative imagery in wall painting, plasterwork, carved wood and stone and a range of objects including furniture, textiles and ceramics. The character of this ”decorative” art is explored in relation to the functions of rooms in the early modern domestic interior with a focus on how religious imagery might inform and support spiritual activities taking place within the home. The visual evidence throughout the book is supported by extracts from contemporary texts to elucidate the meanings of imagery for its original audience.

 Living in Provence

Living in Provence

$27.89

Provence is a way of life. Its gardens are visions of paradise rediscovered, its houses–whether looking out over sea, forest, the countryside, a shady terrace, or a patio full of flowers–reflect a secret harmony between interior and exterior.Today’s architects and interior decorators have in no way renounced Provençal tradition, but rather have drawn tried and tested knowledge from it. They play on the purification of lines, the fluidity of spaces, the rhythm of volumes and the refinement of details. A house in Provence can mean a cardinal’s palace, the showcase for a contemporary art collection, or a simple cabin screened by trees. What is important is the spirit of these places, which reflects the gentle way of life that is the specialty of the Midi. This book features sections on gardens, interiors (including contemporary houses, village houses, farmhouses, log cabins and lodges, and historical buildings), and useful information on restaurants, hotels and guesthouses, and best sources for authentic decorating in the Provence style.
