Designer Furniture

Where to buy modern contemporary furniture?
My parents refuse to buy furniture from Ikea, target, living spaces, jc penny because they think it is “cheap”
i need to find more places like Catoni, Plummers, Roche Bobois, Horizon, Ashley, Crate and Barell, Pottery Barn.
do you any other designer furniture stores that sells modern contemporary furniture besides these stores? ive checked the other stores and they dont have the platform bed im looking for. i live in southern california, orange county which is 30-40 minutes away from LA.

A Modern World $75 Americans living in the first decades of the twentieth century felt they inhabited a modern age. A spirit of excitement and experimentation transformed the world around them, in particular the consumer goods that filled their homes and offices. A Modern World draws upon the renowned collection of American decorative arts at the Yale University Art Gallery to explore the appearance and dissemination of modern design in the United States. This catalogue organizes roughly 300 examples of silver, glass, industrial design, furniture, medals, jewelry, and printed textiles into thematic groups that chart the aesthetic and social trends that defined American design from the Jazz Age to the Space Age. The authors consider modernism broadly–from handmade luxury goods to mass-produced housewares–establishing a context for the objects within larger international developments in architecture, avant-garde art, and scientific innovation. New research and compelling juxtapositions offer an expanded understanding of the era, and designer biographies and corporate chronologies help make this catalogue a valuable resource. |

All My Life for Sale $0.99 The classic American passion for the road meets the current obsession with internet consumption in one of the most original illustrated books to come along in years. One day, John Freyer decided to sell everything he owned on the internet. He invited his friends over to tag all the possessions in his apartment, and he systematically put them up for sale on eBay. An unopened box of taco shells, half a bottle of mouthwash, almost all of his clothes, his favorite records, his sideburns (in a plastic bag), his family’s Christmas presents (not yet given), furniture: John didn’t let sentiment or utility stand in his way. Soon his belongings were sold all over the world, with a bag of Porky’s BBQ Pork Skins making its way to Japan, and a chair ending up in the Museum of Modern Art. With almost all the objects in his life now gone, he started the second phase of his journey: to go visit his one-time possessions in their new surroundings. All My Life for Sale is an extraordinary book that functions as an autobiography, a travel narrative, and a meditation on what the objects we surround ourselves with actually mean to us and what happens when we set them free. Designed by the author himself, it is visually striking, surprisingly moving, and will change the way you look at the things that surround you. Author Biography: John Freyer was born in Syracuse, New York and is the fifth of seven children. After graduating from Hamilton College with a degree in Political Science, Freyer worked at Light Work, a non-profit arts organization in upstate New York. In 1999, Freyer co-founded Wind-Up Films, an action sports film production company. He has been a snowboard instructor, a cinematographer on ski and snowboard films, and a graphic designer. Freyer has created numerous web sites, including his ongoing travelogue Temporama.com. He is currently a Bodine Fellow in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Iowa and lives in |

Antoni Gaudi: Architect and Artist $32.69 Spanish architect and designer, Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926) was an important and influential figure in the history of contemporary Spanish art. His use of colour, application of a range of materials and the introduction of organic forms into his constructions were an innovation in the realm of architecture. In his journal, Gaudi freely expressed his own feelings on art, the colours used in architecture have to be intense, logical and fertile. His completed works (the Casa Batllo, 1905-1907 and the Casa Mila, 1905-1910) and his incomplete works (the restoration of the Poblet Monastery and the Retable d’Alella in Barcelona) illustrate the importance of this philosophy. His furniture designs were conceived with the same philosophy, as shown, for example, in his own office (1878) or the lamps in the Placa Reial in Barcelona. The Sagrada Familia (1882-1926) was a monumental project which eventually took over his life (it was still incomplete at the time of his death). |

Architectural Model Building: Tools, Techniques, & Materials $50 Advances in computer aided design have proven to be an invaluable tool for the architect and designer, yet Frank Gehry still begins his creative process by making “simple” models out of modest materials. Drawings and video, while an essential part of the design process, are still not substitutes for the tactile sensation one receives from a scale model. Drawing on 20 years experience in art and architecture, the author has developed this book on model making as it applies to students and professionals of the built environment. More than 300 photographs illustrates a multitude of techniques and the use of a wide variety of materials, providing a solid foundation for students and professionals to create and enjoy three-dimensional model making for interior design, architecture, landscape architecture, furniture design, theatrical design, and retail merchandising. |

During the Middle Ages it was a considerable centre of commerce and shipping, and under the Hohenstaufen emperors was raised to the rank of an imperial free city.In 1283 Count palatine Ludwig mortagaged the customs duty to Count Eberhard of Katzenelnbogen. In 1312, however, the emperor Henry VII pledged the town to his brother Baldwin, archbishop elector of Trier, and it remained in the possession of the electors until it was absorbed by France during the Revolutionary epoch. It was assigned by the Congress of Vienna in 1815 to Prussia. Boppard lends its name to the Boppard line, an imaginary line relating to German dialects. Notable people from Boppard include physical chemist Fritz Straßmann and furniture designer Michael Thonet, while Boris Skossyreff is buried there. On Fleckertshöhe near Boppard, there is a transmitter for FM and TV using as antenna tower a rarely used partially guyed tower. The soap manufacturer Sebamed is headquartered in Boppard. Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Bugatti was founded in Molsheim, France as a manufacturer of high performance automobiles by Ettore Bugatti, an Italian immigrant described as an eccentric genius. The original company is legendary for producing some of the most exclusive cars in the world, as well as some of the fastest. The original Bugatti brand failed with the coming of World War II, like many high-end marques of the time. The death of Ettore’s son Jean was also a contributory factor. The company struggled financially, and released one last model in the 1950s, before eventually being purchased for its airplane parts business in the 1960s. Today the name is owned by Volkswagen Group, who have revived it as a builder of limited production exclusive sports cars. Type 35C (1926), painted in the blue racing colour of France.Founder Ettore Bugatti was born in Milan, Italy, and the automobile company that bears his name was founded in 1909 in the town of Molsheim located in the Alsace. The company was known both for the level of detail of its engineering in its automobiles, and for the artistic way in which the designs were executed, given the artistic nature of Ettore’s family (his father, Carlo Bugatti (1856-1940), was an important Art Nouveau furniture and jewelry designer). The company also enjoyed great success in early Grand Prix motor racing, winning the first ever Monaco Grand Prix. The company’s success culminated with driver Jean-Pierre Wimille winning the 24 hours of Le Mans twice (in 1937 with Robert Benoist and 1939 with Pierre Veyron). Bugatti’s cars were as much works of art as they were mechanical creations. Engine blocks were hand scraped to ensure that the surfaces were so flat that gaskets were not |

C. F. A. Voysey: Architect, Designer, Individualist $29.95 A leading figure in the British Arts and Crafts movement, Charles Francis Annesley Voysey (1857–1941) could easily have made a career out of pattern design alone, for his ingenious textiles and wall coverings in fresh, clear colors won him international acclaim. By the mid-1890s, however, he also was hailed as one of Britain’s most innovative architects. For the small country houses that were his specialty, he rejected the lavish ornamentation and historical trappings so beloved by the Victorians, relying instead on simple, expressive forms and materials. His influence on the field of architecture cannot be overstated. As one critic noted in 1927, “Voysey . . . set architects in a new relation to their work. It is not only the things he did, but more particularly the spirit in which he addressed himself to his tasks, which places architects and architecture in his debt.”Like other Arts and Crafts practitioners, Voysey believed that no aspect of a house was too small to merit the architect’s attention. Even by this standard his versatility was astonishing, encompassing all manner of furniture, cabinetry, fixtures, and floor and wall coverings. Behind literally every one of these elements—from the shape of a clothes hook to the sweep of a roofline—lay a strong and unorthodox spiritual philosophy that often set Voysey at odds with others in his profession, even as he rose to become a leading force among the architects and designers of his time. His wallpapers and textiles, in particular, reveal Voysey’s complex personality—his lifelong love of England’s flora and fauna, his belief that a reverent observation of the natural world might hasten humanity’s spiritual evolution, and his unusually whimsical (and occasionally wicked) sense of humor. Today his images are as beloved as they were then.In C.F.A. Voysey: Architect, Designer, Individualist, Anne Stewart O‘Donnell traces Voysey’s extraordinary creative output through his professional career |

C.F.A. Voysey $39.95 From the 1890s until the outbreak of the First World War, C F A Voysey was one of the most successful and renowned British architects. His elegant, white-rendered houses with stone window dressings and sweeping green-slate roofs combined clarity with a sensual appreciation of natural materials. A designer of all things domestic, as well as an architect, he was often involved in every aspect of a house’s interior from wallpaper, curtains and furniture to fire grates. Moreover, the fluid curves of his decorative designs and the elongated simplicity of his furniture prove him to be a vital historical link between the Arts and Crafts and the Modern movements. As the first definitive account of Voysey’s architectural career, this book combines contemporary sources — photographs, quotations, original wallpaper designs and watercolour perspectives — with specially commissioned photography of his houses. |
